| In 1954, a commitee of experts under the chairmanship of P R Nayak, then Municipal Commissioner of Bombay reported, "Jamshedpur had been able to achieve and maintain a high level of service and amenities. Comparisons are odious, but it would not be wry to say that the only town that, in our experience, approach Jamshedpur in these matter are New Delhi(before the war and influx of persons affetcted its standards), Mysore, Banglore (part), Secunderabad and Bombay (part). Overall, it is perhaps today the best. Foresight in planning, considerable imagination and the expenditure of large resources that would not otherwise have been available all these have gone into building Jamshedpur to its present standards. | We are constantly accused by people.... of wasting money on the town of Jamshedpur. We are asked why it should be necessary to spend so much on housing and on welfare. People who ask these questions are sadly lacking in imagination. We are not putting up a row of workmen's hut at Jamshedpur. We are building a city........R D Tata addressing Tata Steel shareholders on Oct 25,1923 |
