Bezonji Dadabhai Mehta : Mr. Bezonji Dadabhai Mehta was the right hand man of Jamshetji Nusserwanji Tata. B D Mehta was a Goods Superintendent on the Great Indian Peninsula Railway. While Mr. J N Tata was in Nagpur, supervising the cotton mill, he was on constantly on a lookout for an efficient helper. He told his friends that he was looking for someone, with common sense, honestly and intelligence, whom he could train according to his own ideas. Among those who attracted his attention was a young parsee, Bezonji Dadabhai Mehta. Though Mr. Bezonji knew nothing of the cotton industry, he had considerable experience in the oraganization, and possessed those qualities of character which appealed to Mr. Tata. In 1876 J N Tata took him into his employment, after two years training, installed hima as manager of the Empress Mill. Since Mr. Tata's death, the mills which he founded prospored even more than in his lifetime. No one did more to preserve the high standard of the firm than did B D Mehta. In his own line he proved himself to be a genius. On all sides he is recognized as a great manager, to whom abundant credit should be given. Not only, did he control the Empress, but he was constantly at Mr. Jamsetji Tata's side throughout the difficult period which marked the launching of the Svadeshi and Advance Mills. At Mr. Tata's death Bezonji continued as Manager at Empress Mills in Nagpur. although Dorabji Tata offered him a directorship, which he declined. In 1911 he was the recipient of knighthood, and everyone in Nagpur was proud of the honour bestowed upn him the King Emperor, who said to him at once, "I know you have splendid mills here".
